What to Expect From a Massage Session

What to Expect

Your massage will take place in a comfortable atmosphere with relaxing music and on a padded table - warmed in winter by an electric blanket. You should expect a peaceful, relaxing experience.

This page deals with some of the details of a massage session.

Initial Consultation

After a comprehensive client information sheet has been filled out (click here to view it), the first appointment generally begins with Sharon asking what prompted you to get a massage, your current physical condition, medical history, lifestyle, stress level, and painful areas. Sharon may ask you about your health goals and what you hope the massage will do to help you achieve those goals.

Undressinclinicg and Draping

For a full-body relaxation massage you will be asked to remove clothing to your level of comfort (almost always with underwear on, unless access to the gluteal muscles is limited by underwear). Undressing takes place in private, and a clean white sheet is provided for draping.

Sharon will un-drape only the part of your body being massaged, ensuring that your modesty is respected at all times.

Lubricants such as
cold-pressed almond oil or beeswax-based massage wax (some with essential oils) are used. Different clients have different preferences, but both lubricants are absorbed by the skin well and you should not feel oily afterwards. You're welcome to use the sheet to wipe off any excess, should you feel the need.

Pain or Discomfort

Sharon will set up a pressure scale at the beginning of the massage to ensure she is working at a comfortable level for you.

Depending on the type of bodywork performed, clients can experience pain from time to time. There can be tender spots for those suffering severe or prolonged muscle tension or OOS. Please do not hesitate to let Sharon know during the massage if you are experiencing any pain.

Duration

A session can be anywhere from 30-90 minutes long, depending on the needs of the client.

An initial session would involve taking the client history and a discussion regarding injuries, surgeries, tenderness, medical conditions, etc. The massage would follow. A minimum of an hour, including discussion, is advisable for the first session for a new client – longer if the massage alone is to be an hour long.

Frequency

For general, preventative maintenance of your body, a 30-60 minute massage every two to three weeks would be the ideal frequency.

In cases of specific problems or dysfunction, more often is recommended, until an appropriate outcome is achieved.

Not a Sexual Service

Please note that Sharon provides massage and body therapies as a healing art and not a sexual service. Any illicit or sexually suggestive remarks or advances will result in the immediate termination of the session.
